School Programs

We offer interactive programs for various grade levels, learning about the Colonial period, how to read the Cherokee alphabet, exploring the world around you, and living at home during World War II.

Extended Classroom Programs
We have joined with The Grand Theatre and the Booth Western Art Museum to offer a variety of extended classroom programs which are correlated with the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) objectives for each grade level. These multi-disciplinary programs offer students an interactive learning experience. A teacher's guide with pre-visit and post-visit activities is sent prior to the program date.

The cost for these programs are noted with each program.

Map Happenings - First and Third Grade
Minimum of 15 and Maximum of 120 students per 2 hour session.  $7.00 per student.
At the Bartow History Center, discover the importance of maps through games and hands-on activities that teach directions, map symbols, and other map skills. Explore the area's history using your own museum map. Then at The Grand Theatre, compare the cultures of the seven continents through music and visual images.  Play maracas in South America and yodel as the Austrians do in Europe.  There's even a song for Antarctica! Map Happenings Teacher Guide

Pioneer Pathways - Fourth Grade
Minimum of 15 and maximum of 90 students per 90 minute session. $4.00 per student.
Travel back to the time of the early settlers and find out how life was very different for families by exploring the Pioneer exhibit.  Relive the days of the one-room schoolhouse as you learn your lessons with slates and quill pens.  GPS: SS4H3

Pioneer Pathways Teacher Guide

Cherokee Life and Legends - Second and Fourth Grade
Minimum of 15 and Maximum of 120 students per 2-hour session.  $7.00 per student.
Examine the lives of Cherokee Indians through the Cherokee exhibit, by handling artifacts, playing a Cherokee game, and shooting the blowgun at the Bartow History Center.  The Grand Theatre stage will come alive with the constellations that tell about Cherokee culture. Students will hear Cherokee myths and legends linked to the stars.
 GPS: SS2H1, SS2H2, SS2G2, SS4H1

The Union Dissolved - American Presidents and the Civil War - Fifth Grade
Minimum of 15 and maximum of 120 per 2-hour session. $6.00 per student;  $8.00 for parents/chaperones
From the Founding Fathers to Fort Sumter to Appomattox Court House, explore the Presidents, underlying causes, major battles and camp life of soldiers who were players in the tragedy that was the American Civil War. Through guided activities in the Presidential and Civil War galleries, exploration of Civil War camp life and a hands-on art activity, students become eyewitnesses to the unfolding drama that threatened to tear the nation apart. This program takes place at the Booth Western Art Museum and is jointly sponsored by the Bartow History Center. A complete Teacher's Guide with integrated activities is available when booking this program.  GPS: SS5H1

Homefront, Battlefront - Fifth Grade
Minimum 15, maximum 120 per 2-hour session; $7.00 per student
At the Bartow History Center, explore the lives of the men, women, and children who lived during World War II by learning about rationing and Victory Gardens and by interviewing a veteran or local resident of the era. Then at The Grand Theatre, learn the lingo, jingles, and songs that kept troops' spirits up during WWII. Find out how entertainers and everyday citizens pulled together to support the war effort.  GPS: SS5H4, SS5H5, SS5H6

Homefront, Battlefront Teacher Guide

Different Voices, Different Truths - Eighth Grade
Maximum 120 per 2-hour session; $6.00 per student
Explore issues of race and community through visits to the Bartow History Center and the Summer Hill Museum. With oral interviews, photograph and document analysis, exhibit critiques, and other interactive methods, students will investigate African American history of the area and how it is a part of all of us. GPS: SS8H7, SS8H11, SS8RC1, ELA8W2, ELA8W3, ELA8LSV2

Summer Hill Teacher Guide

Museum Tour - All Ages
Learn about life in Bartow County from 1800 to the 1950s through a guided tour of the History Center's Museum and an artifact identification activity. This program last one hour and is $3 per student. Maximum of 30 students.

Traveling Trunk Program
We also offer an exciting, hands-on traveling trunk program, which is designed to augment a variety of classroom lessons. A staff member from the Bartow History Center will travel to your school with an old trunk filled with artifacts pertinent to a specific topic. The trunk is unpacked and students are allowed to handle some of the objects as their instructor provides a lesson related to the subject.

Program length: 45 minutes.

Below are our Traveling Trunk programs for the 2007-2008 school year.

Old Fashioned Toys and Games Trunk - K and up
Students will make an old fashioned spin top and play old time games, such as Jacob's Ladder, marbles, and whirligig.

Farm Life - Pre-K and up
Compare the chores of children today with those of farm children a long time ago, learn the difference between farm animals and zoo animals, and churn butter.

Pioneer Pathways Trunk - K and up
Experience the daily life of pioneers at work and play with artifacts and activities, including butter churning and learning in a one-room schoolhouse.

Cherokee Life - Second Grade and up
Arrowheads and pottery shards give clues about the Cherokee way of life. Students try their luck at shooting the blowgun.

Civil War Trunk - Fourth Grade and up
A haversack holds the soldier’s most prized possessions and is his "home away from home."  Students get to sample hardtack and learn about life on the battlefront and the home front through artifacts of the times.

World War II Trunk - Fourth Grade and up
From battlefront to home front, students learn about V-mail, Victory Gardens, and participate in rationing activities.
